Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that affects many older people in the U.S., according to the latest census. This disease is caused by the death of brain cells. The result is memory loss. This neurological disorder is devastating to watch along the process. According to the Mayo clinic, Alzheimer’s is caused by genetic changes less than 5% of the time. In 2010, studies showed that about 4.7 million people of 65 years of age and older were affected by this disease. The Alzheimer’s association stated that in 2013, just over a tenth of the 65 and older people were affected, growing to a third of the 85 and older. According to the Alzheimer’s association, 60-80% of the dementia cases are Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s happens progressively over†¦show more content†¦Things that you could change to prevent Alzheimer’s is lack of exercise, smoking, High blood pressure, High blood cholesterol, poorly controlled diabetes, a diet without frui ts and vegetables and low social engagement. If any of those describe you, you may want to change your lifestyle. Your risk of Alzheimer’s may be reduced if you have a higher level of education, a good job that keeps you on your toes, reading, playing games, playing an instrument and having a lot of social interactions. Although, all those things that you can do to prevent Alzheimer’s, scientists don’t know how this reduces your risk; they just know it does. A theory trying to explain it is that the brain may develop more cell-to-cell connections, and that may make it complicated for all the plaques and tangles to develop. In conclusion, scientists have broken the disease down into seven stages. The first stage is the person acting normal, showing no problems at all. They are just fine. The second stage is the person may be forgetting words or misplacing things. Still at this stage, doctors can’t name it as dementia or Alzheimer’s. At the third sta ge, the people that are around them most may notice that they are having trouble remembering names, doing tasks at work, planning events and misplacing things. Now at stage four, an examination would be able to show the symptoms.
